Book Review - An Owner’s Guide to a Happy Healthy Pet Parrot

Book Review - An Owner’s Guide to a Happy Healthy Pet Parrot
by Arthur Freud

Arthur Freud has written an informative book that gives basic information about parrots as pets.

He starts off by explaining a bit about parrots in general, then goes on to talk about the history of parrot keeping. He goes from the wild caught birds that used to be kept as pets leading up to the hand fed birds, or at least domestically raised birds, that are now the only acceptable way of obtaining a parrot for a pet.

He gives information geared toward helping a prospective bird owner, decide which type of bird would be right for him or her, by giving general descriptions of habits, sizes & noise levels of some of the more commonly kept parrots. He has also provided good clear pictures of the birds that he profiled.

The chapter on housing provides good information on cages, perches, dishes, toys and food. The next chapter goes into more detail on the food requirements of parrots.

Throughout the book, Mr. Freud has several little side boxes where he goes into more detail on a certain aspect of what he has written about.

This book has excellent information and tips for someone just thinking about obtaining a first bird, but it also has information that current bird owners would find interesting.
