21 Inch David Cloth Doll

The 21 inch Lalena cloth doll can easily be made into a boy cloth doll. The major change to be made is the clothes. In the picture, David is made using the same doll body pattern as the 21 inch Lalena doll. For the pattern and instructions for making the doll look here

Once the doll is assembled and stuffed, apply the hair to look the way you want your boy to look. For David I kept the yarn loops about 1/2 inch high and covered a smaller section of the head with "hair" to suggest a boy's haircut.

To make his over-alls you will need:
1 pair of old jeans that you can cut up
about 6-7 inches (or the size that will work with the size of your jeans) of 1/4 to 1/2 inc wide elastic

From the jeans cut off 1 leg about 13 inches up from the bottom hem, straight across the leg, keeping the hem intact. You will also need to cut one 3 1/2 inch square for the bib, and 2 rectangles 7 1/2 inches by 1 1/2 inches, for the shoulder straps. Don't worry if the hem of the jeans is a little frayed, little boys play rough in their over-alls and David is no exception!

Hem 3 sides of the bib and the long sides of the straps by turning fabric to the wrong side 1/4 inch and stitch. You can hem the top (cut) edge of the leg section if you wish. I didn't because I prefer the rough, rustic look.

To make the legs of the over-alls turn the leg inside out and lay it flat, with the seams at the sides, and pin the 2 layers together. With a pencil and ruler mark a triangle on the top layer that is 1 inch wide and 8 inches tall. The bottom of the triangle should be the bottom of the existing hem. Cut out the triangle, through both layers, and you now have 2 legs. Stitch the legs, while still pinned and wrong side out, 1/4 inch in from the cut edge.

Cut the piece of elastic in half. Stitch one end of the elastic to the wrong side of the front of the pants, about 1 inch below the top and about 1 inch in from the side seam. The piece of elastic should be parallel to the top edge. Stretch the elastic to within 1 inch of the opposite side seam and stitch in place. Pin and stretch the elastic to the denim between the stitched down ends. Repeat with the second piece of elastic to gather the back of the pants. Turn right side out.

Center the bib just inside the middle of the top front of the pants front with both right sides facing up, so that the stitching lines are on top of each other. The stitching lines are 1/4 inch in from the unhemmed edge of the bib and 1/4 inch down from the top of the pants. Stitch the bib to the pants.

Pin and stitch the straps to the top of the bib, lining up outside edges of straps and bib, with both right sides facing up. Cross the straps in back and stitch them in place so that outside edges of the straps are the same distance from the side seams in back, as the bib is in front.
