Book Review: Copyright for Jewellery Designers
Guest Author - Gillian Buchanan

Copyright has become a highly controversial subject in the hobbies and crafts world, and the book, Copyright for Jewellery Designers by the Bella Online Jewellery Editor Faith Harper, is a guide on copyright issues surrounding the use of images and artwork both in the public domain and under copyright.

The book covers a wide range of issues including:-

  1. Do I need to copyright my own designs?
  2. Standards of minimal creativity
  3. Notes on ideas and techniques, and copyright issues relating to these
  4. Protecting your online images
  5. How to use other artist's designs without violating their copyright
  6. How to create something new from a copyrighted pattern that doesn't violate the copyright of the original
  7. How to ask permission to use another artist's work
  8. Fine art copyright clearance
  9. Public Domain
  10. Sources for public domain images
  11. Using Prints, Reproductions, and Copies of Public Domain Art
  12. Angel Policies And Rubber Stamps

Ms Harper also covers issues such as the use of images from the Dover copyright collections and how to use techniques to create works of art which can be copyrighted to you.

Although the book is aimed at the jewellery craft industry, much of the material is relevant to all the different needlecraft and hobbycraft artist work, and it's a valuable read for anyone wishing to protect their work and understand what is and is not copyrighted.
