Green Living in Hair Care

Green Living in Hair Care
Zosimos Botanicals is a ‘green’ company. When I read this, I had to think about just what does ‘green’ mean to me, in relationship to hair care products? Products should be formulated from ingredients that produce a minimal negative impact on the environment. It also makes me think of the lack of chemicals that could have a negative impact on the user as well.

Zosimos Botanicals LLC is a signatory to the Compact for Safe Cosmetics, a member of Green America, the Green Products Alliance and ranked among the Top 10 Greenest Home-Based Businesses of 2008 by StartupNation. Zosimos products are given an Excellent rating in Health Performance on the GoodGuide.

Owner, Linda Stein is also a contributing author of the book “What’s It Like Living Green” by Jill Ammon Vanderwood.

As owner of Zosimos Botanicals, Ms Stein is also the formulator of her products. She produces an exclusive line of eco-friendly handcrafted hair products as well as mineral makeup and natural cosmetics. Each of the products in this line is individually formulated. As a small family owned business, Zosimos Botanicals maintains a close relationship with its clients. Often, new products are the direct result of customer requests.

I had to ask where the name of the company came from. Ms. Stein tells me that the business name is derived from the historical personage Zosimos of Panoplis, a 3rd Century alchemist. Panoplis is present day Akhmim in the South of Egypt. Alchemy is viewed as the precursor to modern chemistry.

I tried several of Zosimos’ natural hair care products on my own hair and recommend them for your use. Each product contained an impressive list of natural herbal ingredients and organic oils.

Cala Lily Clean Shampoo is an unscented shampoo. Along with many other natural ingredients, it contains nettle and horsetail. Both are believed to encourage hair growth. The shampoo produced nice suds and cleansed my hair very well, leaving it feeling clean.

I followed this with Botanically Beautiful Conditioner. It has a strong but not over powering herbal scent. It felt creamy, released the tangles in my hair and rinsed out easily, leaving my hair soft, shiny and manageable.

The first ingredient listed in both the Cala Lily Clean Shampoo and the Botanically Beautiful Conditioner is Aloe Vera Gel, making them very moisturizing and soothing.

When my hair was dry, I used a small amount of Lippia Tea Hair Oil to calm my frizzy ends. I noted that Lippia Tea Hair Oil is suitable for ethnic hair, so I used only a few drops in the palm of my hand – rubbed my hands together – and lightly stroked them through my hair. The oil was readily absorbed into my hair and did not cause an oily feel. Lippia Tea Hair Oil may also be used as a deep conditioning pre-shampoo treatment. I plan to try this in the near future.
