Exfoliate for Smooth Summer Skin

Exfoliation is an important part of any skin care regime. When the uppermost dead skin layers do not naturally slough off, the skin looks dull. Gentle removal of these dead skin layers makes way for the new skin cells that are migrating up from the lower levels of the epidermis. This reveals skin that’s younger, fresher looking and accounts for that youthful “glow”.

This dead skin layer also keeps moisturizer ingredients from soaking into and nourishing the deeper layers of the skin. Those wonderful oils, herbs and anti-aging ingredients you are putting on your skin aren’t able to do their job well! With the high cost of some of these items, it makes sense to get the most out of them.

There are more benefits to exfoliation: Pores are unclogged, circulation is stimulated and skin is silkier, with a more refined texture. Very touchable!

Here are the basic steps to exfoliation:

Facial Exfoliation

The key here is to be gentle – facial skin is more delicate that the skin on rest of the body. After cleansing with facial cleanser, rinse with lukewarm or cool water. Then, with a light touch, apply an exfoliating scrub designed for the face. Use small circular motions, avoiding the delicate areas around the eyes. The scrub should have tiny grains so it doesn’t tear or irritate the skin. Rinse, pat dry and moisturize.

How often should you exfoliate?

It really depends on your skin type. Younger skin and oily or combination skin can benefit from daily exfoliation, or 4 to 5 times per week. Skin that is dry, more mature, sensitive or fragile would do better with 1 or 2 times a week.

Body Exfoliation

You can also do an overall body exfoliation in the shower. You can simply use your favorite body wash with a special scrub glove or washcloth. Or use an exfoliating body wash or a separate body scrub product. Be gentle. Even though you can use a heavier-duty product than the one you use on your face, if you have sensitive skin use a lighter touch at first.
