Blowin' Smoke BBQ in Savannah, Georgia proved to be just what we were looking for on a recent return trip from the Golden Isles of Georgia. My husband and I could not shake the desire for barbecue, which we used as an excuse for a quick trip into Savannah.
Roughly 8 miles out of our way from Interstate 95, we ventured to Blowin’ Smoke BBQ on Martin Luther King Boulevard. Open since 2008, Blowin’ Smoke is in a beautiful and fully renovated historic building close to Interstate 16.
Although the restaurant is in the Savannah Historic District, we surprisingly found plenty of parking for Sunday lunch, which can be a rarity in this popular, southern gem of a city.
We came in search of pulled pork sandwiches, and were rewarded with heaping, pecan-smoked pork accompanied with a tangy, sweet vinegar barbecue sauce and scrumptious, hand cut French fries. The sauce creatively merged multiple styles of barbecue, planting it firmly out of the box.
Blowin’ Smoke has an excellent selection of micro brew beers. I chose a Georgia brewery and ordered the Terrapin India Style Brown Ale on tap to wash down my meal. A chalk board in the bar lists upcoming local live music events hosted by Blowin' Smoke.
As we left, the ample patio was beginning to fill up and the mild temperature made us veer away from the car to explore nearby Forsyth Park. This park is the perfect location to stretch your legs and check out a little more of this incredible, southern city.
The idyllic, 30 acre park packs quite a punch, and offers a pre-Civil War fountain, plenty of lush grass for Fido, a Confederate Memorial, a Fragrant Garden for the blind and iconic, swaying, live oak trees full of Spanish moss.
Several historic inns and mansions overlook Savannah's first park, including Forsyth Park Inn and The Mansion on Forsyth Park.
Eventually we returned to the car, vowing to return to Savannah soon. Thumbs up to Blowin Smoke for offering delicious food in a fun, friendly setting and encouraging us to explore a less traveled section of the historic district.
