The Red Pyramid Lesson Ideas

Guest Author - Alissa Moy

The Red Pyramid is another amazing book written by beloved author Rick Riordan. This book is a fantastic choice not only for the middle school crowd, but also as a cross curricular tie in to ancient Egypt. As the ancient cultures are a typical course of study for the middle grade students, this series adds an interesting addition to your typical social studies curriculum. Here are lesson ideas to incorporate in your homeschool classroom:

1. Write about it- Have your student write a preview of the book, or what he or she thinks it may be about. Use only pictures and the jacket cover description. Halfway through the book ask your student to stop and write an ending. Depending on your child's age and writing ability this could be anywhere from one to three pages, typed or handwritten.

2. Take a fun online quiz- Goodreads offers a short quiz to ascertain your student's ability to comprehend the main ideas and facts in the book. Visit the site below to utilize this free quiz:

3. Enjoy a fun quiz- Quizilla and Teen Nick have teamed up to produce a fun quiz to have the reader figure out which character from The Red Pyramid he or she is most like.

4. Ask comprehension questions- Teachers Pay Teachers, a national website which gives teachers an opportunity to make extra money by selling their lesson plans, offers several free plans for The Red Pyramid. The comprehension questions and answer key are a wonderful resource that you can download and print at no cost to you! Registration is free on the site. Here is the link to the questions:

5. Make Math part of your unit- Teachers Pay Teachers also offers a neat tie in for your Math curriculum, based on coordinate graphing. As this is a fun and required skill to master for the middle grade students, this free reproducibles are a must to use:
