Last week I caught an hilarious episode of the television sitcom "Taxi." The episode is number 67, "Jim the Psychic." "Reverend" Jim tells his fellow cabbies about a dream he had where Alex would die after doing the can-can in his apartment on Thursday while wearing a green shirt and a catcher's mask. Alex would be killed after drinking a glass of water at 7:00 and answering the door. Since Jim has had dreams in the past that came to pass, the cabbies become very concerned. Jim's dream predicted that he would meet a beautiful woman, and this part of the dream came true. When Thursday rolls around, everyone is anxious. Alex reassures them by reporting that he has a date with the woman he's just met, so everyone relaxes because Alex won't be in his apartment. But after Alex leaves the garage, Louie answers a phone call from the woman canceling the date because she is sick. At this point, Louie panics and decides that he needs to save Alex. In Jim's dream, Alex was in his apartment with a friend. I found it funny and ironic that Louie creates this condition by going to Alex's apartment.
Louie arrives at Alex's apartment, where Alex attempts to calm him down by putting on a green shirt and catcher's mask and doing the can-can and proving that nothing will happen. Louie relaxes until 7:00, when Alex drinks a glass of water and there is a knock on the door. Of course, the person on the other side is not a murderer but Louie is still pretty shaken. At the end of the episode, we're not quite sure whether Louie has learned his lesson.
Most of us have dreamed about death with no ill effects. Dreams speak to us in symbols and in dream symbolism, death is often a positive symbol. Death symbolizes new beginnings and closing the door on the past. But what about instances where dreams like this do come true?
Some people are so psychically attuned that they will have accurate premonitory dreams, but this is rare. Many times, the dreamer is unable to pinpoint a specific person, time or place until after the event occurs, which could be days, weeks, months or even years into the future.
There are also times that these dreams can be purely coincidental. For instance, your dream about death may symbolize change or new beginnings and someone related to the dream happens to die following the dream.
Dream interpretation is based on symbolism. If we got hung up in believing that every negative thing we dream about will come true, we will cause ourselves undue stress and literally drive ourselves crazy. Louie's peformance in this episode was extreme, but it does show us what can happen if we take dreams too literally.
May all your dreams come true!
