Personal Chef Essentials - Setting Your Foundation

This isn't going to be your traditional "How To Start A Personal Chef Business" article. Personal cheffing can be both rewarding and draining depending on how you start your processes. When it comes to your success model, it's always important that you start with an objective or big picture in mind to, not only, refer to, but on which to base your business strategies. In this article we're going to set the foundation for this series and layout a list of 'to-think-ofs' for you to structure a sound business model.

There's no cut and dry blueprint to running your personal chef business. Depending on where your service is located will also determine what you can and can't legally do, along with how you can expand upon your personal chef offerings. When I'm looking at consulting for any business or industry there are a few basic questions I tend to ask them:

What's your objective?
What's your timeline?
What's your community?
What do you have to work with?
When do you want to get started?

These questions are straightforward and can deliver all of the necessary information to get any business set up properly. Let's briefly examine them a little more closely.

What's your objective?
Based on your objective[s] you will map your 'get there' strategies. This is your big picture. Where you ultimately want to end up. This is going to identify your reason and your reason for choosing the personal chef industry and create more relevant questions for your asking to develop a sound plans and protocols.
Why have you or are you considering choosing a career in this field?
What's in it for you?
How do you plan on leveraging it?

What's your timeline?
This is your perspective lens and priority-maker. If your timeline is 1 year from now as opposed to 25, your priorities are going to have to be drastically honed and/or truncated to make everything work together like a fine oiled machine. Shorter timelines always translate out to only having the absolute best elements working on your behalf 'rigtht now'. Everything has to be lean and efficient to insure there's no wasted time, energy or resources.

What's your community?
Communities are comprised of your support network, mentors, spokespeople, buyers, followers, vendors, contributors, family & friends... any and everyone who play a role in helping you succeed in your objectives. They help organically steer your ship in the right direction. Some of the things fall ing under that umbrella are:

logistics
keeping conversations going and relevant
your audience
quality control
organic content creation
natural marketing
clients

What do you have to work with?
This is your inventory calculator question. This not only takes in your current tools; it takes into consideration your:

finances
connections
knowledge base
resources

When do you want to get started?
Answering this makes your statement. It denotes when your commitment level and desire for action will meet.

These are the most important preliminary questions to answer. They help you isolate your key areas of focus before expending your energies. As a personal chef, there are as many avenues open to you as you can imagine. You just have to imagine.
