Wind and Air Dreams

Guest Author - Deanna Joseph

I dreamt that I was a child again, and I was walking home from school. It was very windy, and I stretched my arms out wide, sure that I could fly.

The phrase winds of change pretty much sums up the symbolism behind dreaming of wind.

To dream of wind is to dream of change, and a way of thinking, as air is very strongly connected to the intellect. It can be gentle, like a breeze or zephyr, or it can be life changing and tumultuous as a tornado.

Think of the popular story about the butterfly that flaps its wings in China, and creates a hurricane in Japan. This is known as the butterfly effect, or sometimes the butterfly principle. Small things you do now can have a big impact on your life later on.

In Arabic and in Hebrew, the word for wind also signifies breath and spirit. The Secret Language of Signs by Denise Linn.

Some spiritual traditions believe that the Universe was created by the breath of God. To dream of the breath could mean creation and rebirth.

Without air, no one could survive. To dream you are not receiving air, or suffocating, could mean that you, or someone in your life, is putting pressure on you to do something you don't want to do.

To dream of smoke may mean that on top of the suffocating feelings you are experiencing, you are also lacking the ability to see things clearly. And keep in mind that where there's smoke, there's fire. This could indicate something happening in the background that you are unaware of.

In the tarot deck, the suit of Swords represents the element of air. Air is symbolic of opinions, thoughts, mental actions and beliefs.

The medicine wheel from the Native American tradition generally puts the element of air, which represents the mind, in the direction of the East, with the flying creatures; birds, butterflies, dragonflies, etc.

"No," he heard a voice on the wind say. "If I had told you, you wouldn't have seen the Pyramids. They're beautiful, aren't they?" Paulo Coelho ~ The Alchemist.

Hidden in the wind are messages from your soul. Dreaming of wind, or air, means change. Look at your life and see what you may be doing to help yourself move forward. What are you doing that may be holding you back? Allow yourself to see things from a new perspective, and allow your consciousness to be expanded. Though excitement, creativity and chaos may be happening all around you, know that you have within you all you need to move forward and flow with the winds of change.
