Flying star feng shui, xuan kong fei xing, is one of the schools of feng shui practice popular today. Sometimes is it referred to as time and space feng shui.
As the name implies timing is important- yearly, monthly and daily timings are the most used. But the longer time period of 20 years is also significant. You can break timing down to hours and minutes as well. The space reference comes from the location in your house both inside and outside the building.
The stars in the name are not actual stars but rather energies. They move from location to location throughout the time periods interacting with other stars. This creates a beneficial situation or the opposite - a detrimental situation and sometimes they even create a neutral effect.
I like to think of the stars as dance partners. Some partners will step on your feet or even drop you causing injury. Others are neither good, or bad. You dance well together but no one stops to watch forming a circle around you. And if you are lucky you get the best kind of partner, the one that makes you an even better dancer than you are.
Each star has its own personality. Timing affects the star to enhance or make stronger both its good and bad traits. Each star is given a number, 1 through 9. Here are their basic personalities.
1 = powerful position, money
2 = pain and sickness, loneliness, miscarriage
3 = gossip, arguments and lawsuits
4 = promotion, career advancement, creativity, scholastic achievement
5 = pain, accidents, fire
6 = wealth and authority
7 = arguments, slander, bleeding, robbery, backstabbing
8 = fame, good name and fortune
9 = celebration, enhances the star it meets
Each star can be placed on a tic tac toe grid representing the compass directions. Here is the native location for each star. Please remember that the Chinese put south at the top and not north.
1 = North
2 = Southwest
3 = East
4 = Southeast
5 = Center
6 = Northwest
7 = West
8 = Northeast
9 = South
As time moves forward the stars rotate through the squares of the grid in a very particular order. This way they visit all the compass directions over time. Start with the center square (number 5). The first move is to the Northwest and then to the West for the second rotation. The third move will find number 5 in the Northeast. The next rotation is to the South and then to the North. Southwest is the next stop and then on to the East. The final move is to the Southeast and then back to the center. This is the basic pattern of rotation over time.
The center square does not have to contain the number 5. You can put the number for the year, month, day or 20 year period in the center and then float the stars following the same pattern. That way you can find what energy is in any location at any time. There are other uses for the grid and floating pattern but they are beyond the scope of this article and I’ll save them for some other article.
