Animating Color of Shapes in Motion 5

Animating Color of Shapes in Motion 5
In this tutorial, we will use keyframes to create a simple MotionR 5 animation which turns the design elements on the screen from one color to another. This technique is great for an animated logo reveal.

We have five design elements on the screen which are the company name, tagline, web address, color bar and background color. The background color, which is the most dramatic design element when the animation begins, may be taken from the company’s brand guidelines. The color and font for the company name and/or logo graphic may also be taken from the guidelines. For the example, the colors for the company are black and white. The tagline and web address will be in a font, such as Helvetica, which is easy to read on the monitor. The animation will turn the background color to white and the white design elements, the text and bar, to the dominant color.

Another choice for the color scheme may be taken from the subject of the video. For example, the dominant color in a product design may be used.

As this is a 10 seconds logo reveal that can be added to any Motion template, the reveal animation will have a duration of 6 seconds, followed by another 1 second animation, which leaves the final design on the screen for 3 seconds before the beginning of the main video content.

Our first step will be to add a solid colored background rectangle that covers the entire screen and to add the bar that runs horizontally across the screen. We will use the most dominate color in the color scheme for the background and a secondary color for the color bar.

  1. Start a new Motion project with a duration of 10 seconds and a resolution of your choice.

  2. In the Layers pane, rename the project layer to Logo Reveal.

  3. Rename the default Group layer to Colors and draw a rectangle over the entire screen with the Rectangle tool. You will get a new layer named Rectangle in the Colors group.

  4. In the Inspector - Shape tab, set the Fill Color for the rectangle to the dominate color of your choice. Lock the layer.

  5. Again with the Rectangle tool, draw the color bar across the screen about 2/3 from the top of the screen. Set the color for this rectangle to your secondary color in the color scheme. Rename this layer to Bar and lock this layer.

In the next tutorial, we will add the text. Once the elements are in place, we can begin to add the keyframes that will animate the color change.
