Understanding Video SEO by Ian Lurie
You can upload a lot of animated video intros, outros and trailers on to YouTube but how do you get people to see your great animations. Just as there are SEO techniques for websites, there are also SEO techniques for videos.

In this lynda.com video training entitled Understanding Video SEO, Ian Lurie teaches the basics of achieving high rankings for your videos and gives you his best tips for increasing your video ranking.

As in most video marketing courses, Lurie begins with a discussion of the top most video hosting options and how videos achieve a higher ranking in search engines. He discusses the factors that affect your video ranking from keywords to user interaction. He also discusses some factors to which you might be less familiar. Next, he discusses some of the top myths for increasing your video ranking. He also discusses the pros and cons of the most popular methods of hosting your videos.

Moving on to the content for your videos, Lurie discusses the importance of your video's topic and includes some of his personal tips. He covers meta topics and the difference between topics and key phrases. He also gives a quick overview of YouTube's keywords tool and how to use YouTube's suggestions in the search box. Finally, he discusses how to use Google Trends. Tags are as important as keywords on YouTube and Lurie gives a few well learned tips for using tags.

In the next lesson, Lurie covers video views and how the number of views affect SEO ranking. He also discusses his rules for writing a title and description for your video and how quality comments and ratings can help your SEO.

One of the biggest problems with video SEO is the lack of text for search engines. Lurie discusses how this can be helped with captions, annotations and especially transcripts, which are ways to add text to your videos. He ends this lesson with a discussion of his best practices when embedding your video in to your website.

I found the last lesson very helpful as Lurie discusses a social media launch plan and gives a few tips to follow, such as using a video XML sitemap, how to optimize your YouTube channel and how to make use of YouTubeR analytics tools.

Ian Lurie is CEO and founder of Portent and has authored several books.
