Miniature Tatting for Dollhouses

Miniature Tatting for Dollhouses

My new issue (Jan/Feb 2016) of PIECEWORK magazine contained an announcement of a contest for miniatures. They are offering 5 categories, knitting/crochet, needlework, beading, quilting, and (my favorite) lacemaking/tatting. The entry deadline is April 1, 2016. And April 1 is International Tatting Day!

I hope that all tatters will consider entering.

This reminded me of my first attempt at writing a book of patterns for miniature tatting for doll houses. Goodness that was 1995! 20 years ago. I had several patterns for doilies and table runners. I showed how to layout a bedspread to tat using split ring technique. I also showed how to make miniature picture frames to show off the mini tatting, a baby's bib, a miniature beaded rosary and the miniature tatting shuttle, thread winder and a bit of a repeat already completed. So many opportunities exist for embellishing any dollhouse.

The pattern for the miniature tatting shuttle is posted.

These are the measurements I used for my work.

A Guide to Measurements for Miniature Linens and Household Items

Tablecloths with lace edgings or made from solid lace fabrics should be the same
in size, that is, the lace edging should not exceed the base measurements. But remember this is only a guide.

Round tablecloths normal size 70" miniature size 5.8"; 90" = 7.5"

Square tablecloth normal size 52" x 52" = 4.3" x 4.3"

Rectangular tablecloths:

52" x 70" = 4.3" x 5.8"

60" x 84" = 5" x 7"

60" x 102" = 5" x 8.5"

60" x 120" = 5" x 12"

70" x 90" = 5.8" x 7.5"

70" x 112" = 5.8" x 9.3"

70" x 126" = 5.8" x 10.5"

Oval tablecloths:

60" x 84" = 5" x 7"

60" x 102" = 5" x 8.5"

70" x 90" = 5.8" x 7.5"

70" x 108" = 5.8" x 9"

70" x 126" = 5.8" x 10.5"

Doilies intended for use on end tables or side tables seldom exceed 2" in length.

Round 1" or 2" Oval 1" x 2"

Square 1" x 1" or 2" x 2"

Rectangular 1" x 2"

Table runners for the dining room table vary greatly in size and styles.

Common sizes:

Rectangular 17" x 70" = 1.4" x 5.8"; 17" x 90" = 1.4" x 7.5"

Table toppers often placed over a decorator round table on top of a solid color or
floral print with ruffled edge tablecloth which hangs to floor are made in two basic
shapes.

Round 34" diameter = 2.8" 36" diameter = 3"

Square 45" = 3.75"

Place mats are a standard one size but may vary from rectangular to oval shape. Napkins
are a basic square normally with no or narrow edgings and corner motif.

Basic Place mat 17" x 13.5" = 1.4" x 1.1"

Napkin Square 16", 17" = 1.3", 1.4"

Rugs made with a tatted fringe or braided tatted cording are usually accent rugs.

Rectangular or oval 3’ x 5’ = 3" x 5"; 5’ x 7’ = 5" x 7"
