Where the Wild Things Are Cross Curricular Ideas

Guest Author - Alissa Moy

Where the Wild Things Are is a beloved classic by Maurice Sendak. This book is a perfect resource for a cross curricular theme in your homeschool classroom. Here are some ideas to help you create a "wild" theme for the week!

1. Start your week off by reading this creative and fascinating tale.

2. Fun and games are always a great way to tie in a super story like Where the Wild Things Are. Here is a site with several creative and cool online games:

3. Create a Monster- Use your Art time this week to create monsters! They can be friendly or scary. Make them with geometric cutouts, felt pieces, pain or crayons. You can even use paper bags to make monster puppets.

4. Geography Tie-In- Discuss where this story is thought to take place, specifically an island where the monsters are. Discuss what an island is, and where there are islands. Use a large map to point out locations of islands, as well as the characteristics that make up an island.

5. Reading Comprehension- Retell the story in parts, or arrange several parts of the story in order to demonstrate sequencing skills.

Watch the movie after reading the book to compare and contrast the story and film. Discuss the differences and similarities.
