Get Rid of Frizz with Nioxin's Smoothing
The Nioxin company is well-known for treating hair loss problems. My hair does not show any signs of thinning, except for small areas at the temple, but Nioxin is advertised as ‘skin care for the scalp’ so I decided to try it.

The hair care line includes formulas to take care of virtually any combination of fine, coarse, chemically treated or natural, and early stages of thinning and advanced hair loss. Certainly everyone can find a formula to suit.

My hair is medium in texture, tinted, and naturally curly so I chose Nioxin Smoothing Protectives. The Smoothing line is for medium to coarse or curly hair and the name Protectives means that it is for chemically treated hair.

I used Smoothing Protectives Moisturizing Cleanser. It is hydrating and helps to prevent hair color from fading. It is a good cleanser and still left my hair feeling soft.

Next I used Smoothing Protectives Moisturizing Scalp Therapy. It is a deep conditioner that moisturizes the scalp and helps to guard against harm caused by leftover chemical residue. In addition to working this through my hair, I gently massaged it into my head for a healthy scalp.

Nioxin’s styling line also has something for everyone. Bionutrient Creatives is for fine hair. Smoothing Reflectives is for medium to coarse hair.

After rinsing thoroughly and towel-drying my hair, I applied a small amount –about a nickel size - of Smoothing Reflectives Silk Elixir and combed it through my hair. It is a ‘leave-in’ conditioner. This combed through easily and left my hair feeling silky.

Lastly, I applied about a quarter-sized portion of Smoothing Reflectives Pure Shine Gel for control. I put it in the palm of my hand, rubbed my palms together and worked it through my hair.

I let my hair dry naturally for a curly style. The gel dried to a soft finish – not crispy. The result was a soft, controlled curl with lots of body.

I was happy with the result in my curly style and I wondered how Nioxin Smoothing System would work to straighten my hair. I used the same procedure except that this time I used a blow dryer and round brush to straighten my hair. It turned out smooth and very soft but not limp.

When I blow my hair dry, since it is color treated and naturally curly, the ends sometimes appear dry and frizzy. Nioxin has something for this too. As a finish, I chose Smoothing Reflectives Finishing Crème. I put a pea-sized portion in my hand, rubbed my hands together and lightly touched and scrunched until all the ends were moisturized and smooth.

I give Nioxin’s Smoothing Products two thumbs up. I was so happy with the results of both tests that I’ll continue to use it even though I don’t have any concerns about thinning hair.

Nioxin has gone through some packaging changes. The products for smoothing are now Systems 5 through 8.
