Children's Garden Book Reviews

Guest Author - Katelyn Thomas

Mrs. Spitzer's Garden is a charmingly illustrated little book that is a well written metaphor that talks about a teacher who plants seeds and tends the growing plants throughout the year. When the year is done, the plants continue to grow, but Mrs. Spitzer's job is done. She gets a new pack of seeds from the principal. This book makes a wonderful gift for that special teacher who also enjoys gardening. However, children will also enjoy the story of this teacher's garden, even if they don't catch the metaphor.

Planting a Rainbow is a brightly illustrated book that helps children learn their colors as they find out about the garden a child and his mother plant. Most children's garden books only discuss seeds, but this book starts in the fall with bulbs. Then, the story goes through the winter season with the child realistically pouring over seed catalogs with his mother to choose seeds to plant in the spring. In the spring, they plant their seeds and choose plants from the nursery, as well. The garden grows and they are able to pick flowers from all the colors of the rainbow.

Whose Garden Is It is a beautifully illustrated book. It is a wonderful starting point for discussing garden pests and friends with your child. The gardener claims the garden, but different animals, bugs, and forces of nature say it is theirs instead. They tell what they have done to make the garden grow and thrive.

Waiting for Wings is a brightly illustrated book that follows a butterfly's life cycle from egg to beautiful winged insect. It talks about how butterflies eat nectar and then lay eggs to start the cycle again. The book ends with a butterfly identification guide, information about butterflies, flower identification, and how to grow a butterfly garden. These pages are a wonderful resource for home schoolers or teachers, who can easily use this information to expand the book to create a thematic unit.
