Rhapsody for Dover Graye - Book Review

Rhapsody for Dover Graye
by Shannon Lee Wolf

Pay attention to your dreams for, like the reflections in the pond of your subconscious mind, they reveal much about your waking life. Such is the case about Dover Graye, the protagonist in "Rhapsody for Dover Graye" by Shannon Lee Wolf. Little Dover was born of the caul, which meant that upon his delivery, a thin membrane covered his face and head. A rare occurrence, this was a sign according to Celtic shamanic beliefs that the child comes to earth with unique spiritual insights that will serve humanity, although to what specific end depends upon the individual's chosen path.

Dover Graye must reckon his past life roots in 1700s Scotland as they carry into his present life in eastern United States in the 1960s. His haunting dreams push him onward to settle unfinished business from his past. Somehow, those with a strong inner light attract forces of darkness like moths to a flame, and Graye must contend with demons as well as other sacrifices that a healer is called to make on behalf of the greater good. The contemporary storyline is filled with sex and expletives (well, it was set in the 1960s after all) which is a bit jarring as a juxtaposed next to the tamer Scottish scenery. Overlooking that, I enjoyed when Graye is given aid by his grandmothers who appear with sage nuggets of wisdom and teachings about herbs, mosses and bark.

I love herbal healing, and my own gift of dreams, my remembrances of past lives as well as the Celtic roots of my husband and children made this an interesting read. It is true that spiritual gifts often come wrapped in seemingly troublesome packaging. Discard the difficult wrapping and embrace the gift! Once Graye realizes that his gifts are intended to be great tools to serve, he can move forward with positive intention. Strengthened instead of burdened. To say more would give away the plot but if you have an interest in dreams, reincarnation/past lives or Celtic shamanic herbal healing, you will be drawn into this story.

The author's own life experiences as a caulbearer compelled her to write this drama about the challenges that beset those born with this "holy veil." Shannon Lee Wolf maintains a website (caulbearersunited.webs.com) dedicated to helping other caulbearers along their earth journey. She said that it was in a dream that her deceased father appeared, urging her to rewrite this novel which first was published as "Dover Graye" which is why I included a review in the Bellaonline Dreams site. Dreams are a recurring theme in her book and he life. Like her and her main character, you too must always follow your dreams wherever they take you for in so doing, you will find your true destiny.
