Are you picky about your security? Does it bother you that a stranger may have access to your social security number, credit card numbers, passwords, and banking information?

Keyloggers, also known as surveillance software, can easily gain access to all your personal info, passwords, even emails. To make matters worse, many antivirus programs won't detect keyloggers because of the "good use" some companies have found for the software. For example, monitoring your childs computing habits and chat room activities on your home computer.

Keyloggers do exactly what the name implies - logs your key strokes. This information is then stored to your hard drive as a "log file". The log file information can then be emailed to the responsible party or physically collected from the infected computer if the culprit is a family member, co-worker or manager, or anyone with access to your computer.

So, what can you do to protect yourself and your computer from a keyloggers prying eyes? You can start by downloading KL-Detector, a freeware device that monitors your computer during a test period, looking for the tell-tale log files created by the keylogger.

Unlike typical viruses, you cannot proactively detect a keylogger and prevent the resulting theft of information. Think of keylogging in terms of a telephone tap. Nothing available to the general public will prevent the installation of a tap, but an active "search and destroy" approach will uncover the tap, hopefully, before valuable information can be recorded. KL-Detector will reveal any "taps" on your computer, and an active firewall will prevent any gathered information from being emailed to a third party.

KL-Detector is a stand-alone detector that doesn't need to be installed on your computer. Once downloaded, you close all running programs, open note pad (or something similar), type for about three minutes, then run KL-Detector to see if any log files were created. If they were, then there's a good chance you have a keylogger operating on your machine.

Email support is provided by the creator, Yohanes Aristianto, who will either assist you in removing the keylogger or direct you to a source that can.

Savvy users are downloading KL-Detector to their flash drives, then running it on public computers before entering valuable information. Others are running it on their work computers to see if fellow workers or management are monitoring their activities. Perhaps management has the right to prevent transmissions not related to work, but you have the right to know if someone is secretly recording your key strokes.

Workable with Windows NT 3.51 SP3, Windows 2000, and Windows XP, KL-Detector does not contain spyware and does not access the internet at any time.
