Creative Writing Prompts : Creative Writing Lesson Plan
Guest Author - Meg Grooms

It’s often difficult to encourage active learners to site down and write. Interesting writing prompts provide a starting point for the child to explore their creative side. After Deciding on a prompt work with your child in brainstorming all of their ideas and organize them into a chain of events or outline. Eventually your child will have an original story of their own creation, ready for illustration!

Creative Writing Prompts:

-On one day every year animals can speak. What would the animals you know say?

-The Toothfairy was on her way to your house but made a wrong turn and got lost. Where did she end up and what did she do?

-Report your favorite fairy tale as if you were a newscaster.

-Write an advertising campaign (tv and radio commercials, magazine ads, newspaper column, press release, etc.) for a new invention.

-If you were president for a day what would you change?

-You just discovered you are the long-lost heir of a kingdom of Turnovia. Write a journal describing your first visit, coronation and day-to-day life as the new king or queen.

-Have a friend or family member write down 5 nouns, 8 verbs, 7 adjectives (and so on) and use those words as many times as possible in a short story.

-Your favorite holiday has been cancelled. Write an opinion letter to the newspaper.

-Write an alternate ending to your favorite book or movie. Enlist your friends to help you act it out.

-Create a comic book version of your favorite fairy tale or fable.

-Write a script for a new video game.

-Create a story to accompany a piece of classical music.
