Native American tribes are numerous throughout our lands. Animal symbolism may vary from tribe to tribe. Following are some basic attributes of animals from Stag to Swan.
This series of articles also includes the spirit powers of birds, insects, and reptiles.
Stag
Stags of the deer family include White-tailed deer, Elk, Moose, Red Deer, Reindeer, Roe and Chital. In many cultures the Stag
is considered the Lord of the Forest. Although deer are associated with gentleness, grace, innonence, sensitivity, and loving care of the young, the Stag is more aggressive when it comes to protection of his herd and during the rutting season. They have very keen senses and are very observant of their surroundings. Stags can detect very subtle movements and seem to know intentions of others. They can sense trickery and guide the herd through danger and chaos. The stag is a proud and noble animal and has great leadership abilities. The antlers of the stag are like a tree that sheds and regrows each year -- this is symbolic of rejuvenation and rebirth.
Symbolism: noble, leadership, masculine power, rejuvenation, rebirth, honour, strength, commitment, protective, sexuality, justice, devoted, visionary, clairvoyant, intuitive
Swallow
Swallows are excellent fliers. Their body and wing shapes are perfect for speed and maneuverability. They can hunt and catch insects during flight. Some swallows are very territorial while others just protect their nesting site. They will even attempt to attack humans if one is too close to the nest.
The male will select the nest site then attract the female with song and fancy flight. Most swallows are sociable and live in colonies. They have adapted to living near humans. Due to the amount of insects they eat, many communities encourage nesting by offering artificial nesting colonies, such as large gourd-shaped containers.
Symbolism: protection, warmth for home, proper perspective, great maneuverability and endurance, good hunter
Swan
Swans form monogamous pair bonds that last for many years, and in some cases these can last for life. The mates are very faithful to each other and devoted to their young. The male helps with building the nest and even takes turns with the incubation of the eggs -- thereby giving a balance to the parenting.
A newborn swan (cygnet) is quite awkward and rather odd looking, as in the story of "The Ugly Duckling". They do, however, grow into lovely and graceful adults.
Symbolism: devotion, love, fidelity, dignity, grace, balance, innocence, soul, beauty, transformation, change
