What is Omega-3 And Omega-6 Acids?

Omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids are termed essential fatty acids (EFAs) because they are critical for good health. Your body cannot make them on its own for this reason; they must be obtained from food. Both omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acid stimulate the formation of prostaglandin. Prostaglandin’s are produced by every cell in the body, and control such things as reproduction and fertility, inflammation, immunity and communication between cells. They also inhibit the over-production of thromboxane, a substance in the body that promotes clotting. It is clear that a healthy diet containing significant amounts of foods rich in omega-3 fats and omega-6 is necessary for optimum health.

Omega-3 oils are a family of fatty acids high in EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid), DHA (dihomogammalinolenic acid), and GLA (gamma linoleic acid). Research has found that those suffering from PMS, and high blood pressure benefit from the use of these fatty acids. Omega-3 oils also helps improve, autoimmune diseases rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, Raynaud's disease, just to name a few. This is probably because the omega-3 fatty acids help the arteries, as well as many other parts of the body stay inflammation free. EPA and DHA are successful at this because they can be converted into natural anti-inflammatory substances called prostaglandins and leukotrienes. Omega-3 fats help regulates mental health problems; they enhance the ability of brain-cell receptors to comprehend mood-related signals from other neurons in the brain. The brain is 60% fat and needs omega-3 fats to function properly. Other benefits from omega-3 oils include smoother skin, smoother muscle action, and better digestive function. Omega-3 also provides fuel for the heart, help prevent blood clothing and reduce high blood fat of all kinds. In weight loss diets, omega-3 oils, help to burn fats and increase stamina and can also help overcome food allergies. Omaga-3 can be found in cold-water fish, walnuts oil, wheat germ oil, and evening primrose, and flax oil. Flaxseed oil is the world's richest source of omega 3 fatty acids, containing more than double the amount of omega 3 found in an equal quantity of fish oils

There has been a lot of information on omega-6 in the media lately are they good for you or bad for you. From what I could sort out from all the information is omega-6 oils are a group of fatty acids high in linoleic and arachidonic acids, this include sesame, sunflower and corn oil; flaxseed oil also contains omega 6 fatty acids. The omega-6 fatty acids offer a variety of potential therapeutic uses, but some omega-6s are bad when consumed in excess - primarily linoleic acid, found in many vegetable oils. However, GLA, or gamma linolenic acid in omega-6 is a powerful key to your health and beauty: Most Western diets today consume more then enough of omega-6. This means that, omega-6 supplements are probably not necessary.
