As you can imagine, your work as a writer is a calling card. When you become a writer and look for work, your business card is your work. Depending on the reasons why you became a writer, you may decide to market your work in different ways. A portfolio will allow you to exhibit your work for others to view.
Some people write as a journal. They use the words to put down how they are feeling. They may write them down or they may type them. It just depends on your comfort level. Sometimes when you write down the words of what you are feeling, you begin to feel better. Maybe it is something that has been on your mind for a long period of time. Sometimes writing it down and coming back to it can be a stress reliever. It can also take the emotion out of the words. You will think about what you are thinking before you say it to that person.
You may be writing as a business owner and using those articles for your Ezine or Newsletter. For you, it may mean that it is completely focused on your business. You see the marketing aspect of what you do and use to promote your business or products. In this instance, you may not think about becoming a published author. You use your writing to bring more customers to your business.
Writers who really enjoy writing see it as a potential career. They use their writing to put together a folder of their work. As they become published, it is a way to show your quality work with attractive samples. If you are putting together y
our portfolio, make sure the cover has your name on it. Your resume should come right after the cover. Right after that should be your writing samples. Change your samples based on the type of work you want to receive. Your writing samples should be treated with care and you should only have your best work inside the portfolio. Keep a sheet for your business cards so you can get to them easily.
When you put together a portfolio, you are telling the world that you are serious about becoming a writer. That may mean different things to different people. Whether you become a web copywriter, an author, or a freelance writer the choice is up to you. Gathering your best work will allow you to make the best impression.
