No one seems to know who coined the phrase, “Opportunity strikes but once.” It has probably remained anonymous because no one in their right mind would be willing to stand up and take responsibility for such nonsense.
Yet, this incredibly disempowering thought is so engrained in our common cultural consciousness that it’s pretty difficult to shake off. We all know people who gave up when they failed at something. How many times have you heard someone say, “It’s no use,” “I lucked out” or “Maybe I’ll have better luck next time”
But opportunity is not a matter of chance or luck. It’s a state of mind. It’s how you look at the world. A pessimist sees failures, problems and difficulties. An optimist learns from mistakes and sees opportunity and new possibilities everywhere. The success minded person comes from the point of view, “Whatever happens, I’m going to make the most of it. I can turn any lemon into lemonade.”
Opportunity surrounds us all the time. It’s as prevalent as the air we breathe. And, there’s enough to go around for everyone. All you have to do is open your eyes and look around you. Think of opportunity as a wonderful buffet and, at any moment, you can pick and choose whatever you want. It’s only those who give up who lose.
For example, Back in the 1920’s a young man from Kansas City borrowed $15,000 (a lot of money back then) and started his own business. He failed and went bankrupt, but didn’t quit. He took the clothes he was wearing plus an extra pair of underwear and socks and headed for California to look for another opportunity. His name was Walt Disney and the enterprise he created (in a garage, by the way) now employs 120,000 people and does over $20 billion in sales.
So what are you waiting for? Look for another opportunity!
