Author Steven Hutson began his book in a Christian chat room on the Internet. It was there that he observed that many Christians do not have a deep understanding of their belief. Such as, “What is the difference between the church they attend and the one down the street?” or “What practices of the church are based on biblical truth and which are based on man-made tradition?” Might many of our beliefs have come solely from parents, sermons, television, or books? As Christ followers, are we truly following in the steps of Jesus or of someone else?
His book will cause many of us to question the basis for our belief.
Hutson doesn’t allow the reader to take the easy way out. You may not agree with him but he will cause you to go to your Bible to prove him wrong. Which, I think is the very purpose of his writing. Too many of us coast along in our Christian circle of friends and in our home church without having to dig deep. Christians are commanded to develop deep roots and to know the reasons for our belief.
”Be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have.” 1 Peter 3:15We must also know why we worship as we do. Wrong beliefs can lead us into sin as easily as unbelief.
“Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both your self and your hearers.” 1 Timothy 4:16
“What They Never Taught You in Sunday School” is a combination of Bible study, historical survey and personal testimony. Although I found this confusing at times and a bit hard to follow, it was worth the struggle. It was always educational and challenging. I think it will cause many to make a deeper evaluation of their spiritual and religious life.
