St. Patty's Day for Kindergarten and Pre-K!
Enjoy the "Luck of the Irish" with your younger elementary and preschool homeschooler with several lesson ideas. Please find below a selection of subjects with corresponding activities!
Reading- The classic books "That's What Leprechaun's Do" and "St. Patrick's Day in the Morning" both by Eve Bunting are wonderful stories to start your holiday study with. The illustrations in "St. Patrick's Day in the Morning" are done by another popular children's author, Jan Brett, and there are lots of lesson ideas on Jan's site. One of the ideas is to study Jan Brett's book styles, and to compare/contrast them to Eve Bunting's book. There are also ideas for creating a timeline of the parade in the story, creating a map of the neighborhood and learning about Irish traditions.
Language Arts- Learn about the author Eve Bunting at the Kidsreads.com and discuss how her Irish heritage plays a large part in her writing.
Math- Coordinate your Math lesson with "That's What Leprechauns Do" by teaching counting by 3's. Use manipulatives like gold coins (dollar store or chocolate if you can keep from eating them) and count out groups of three. Create patterns with Lucky Charms cereal in groups of three also.
Art- Learn about the colors in a rainbow and create a rainbow picture using the medium of your choice, such as paints, crayons, chalk, etc. Blend the colors or make them distinct. Don't forget to draw the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow!
Science- After completing some rainbow art segway your lesson to Science by trying some simple color mixing. You can experiment using anything from food dye to paints. Be sure to ask your homeschooler what colors they predict will be made before you mix them. Then record the results of your findings together.
Geography- With the younger students it is hard for them to conceptualize where Ireland is. Pull out a world map and find this pristine country, and discuss it's general location. If desired you can research a few facts about Ireland, too. There are several books with child friendly facts suggested in the BellaOnline Homeschool E-Store to check out.
Just for fun- Celebrate this green holiday anytime by printing fun mazes, or doing cute leprechaun crafts. Ideas can be found at Family Fun.
