Liquor Liability Insurance
Guest Author - Bonnie Sayers

Before you decide to host a work related or personal party on your property where alcohol will be served, check your homeowners and/or renters insurance policy to make sure you have personal-liability insurance coverage.

This would go beyond your dwelling and cover someone who left the premises drunk and proceeded to get into an accident. The host of such party could be sued by the family of the participant.

The various forms of Liquor Liability include serving someone who is clearly intoxicated or contributing to that state.

There are laws that hold bar owners accountable if they allow a patron to leave intoxicated. The Missouri Supreme Court is about to hear the case of a liquor packaged goods store selling beer to a minor who drove drunk and had a fatal crash after consuming the beer. The family has filed a suit against the store owner for serving the minor.

According to Money Central at MSN, " more than 30 states have either case or statutory laws that hold hosts responsible for providing alcohol to minors, or to people who are intoxicated and later are involved in car accidents."

They also make the suggestion to have a party catered, which would help in limiting the drinks each guest can consume. There are also seven tips to follow before hosting a party, which includes stay sober and offer rides home for visitors.

I suggest noting on invitations if alcohol will be served and something about smoking so that guests will be aware of these issues beforehand. If alcohol is being served you might want to consider inviting only those over the age of 21.

Drake University has the following policy for all events -

"Any and all liquor brought onto campus for events must be supplied by Sodexho Food Services. Sodexho carries the liquor license and liquor liability insurance for university events. Food must be provided at all events offering liquor. Selling liquor or charging guests for liquor is prohibited."

The American Radio Relay League, Inc (AARL) has a club liability insurance plan for club sponsored events such as dances, parties, auctions and picnics. This plan also reimburses for first aid and covers the owner of the premises.
