Preventing Texting While Driving

Guest Author - Dominique Jordan

Teens are constantly on their cell phones. They seem to be lost without them. But even though teens love their cell phones like ducks love water, there are some precautions they should take when using a cell phone.

Recently, laws have been passed throughout the country regarding the issue of texting while driving. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported in 2008 that driver distraction was the cause of 16 percent of all fatal crashes -- 5,800 people killed -- and 21 percent of crashes resulting in an injury -- 515,000 people wounded.

According to the American Automobile Association, nearly 50 percent of teens admit to texting while driving. Distracted driving endangers life and property and the current levels of injury and loss are unacceptable.

However, despite these distressing statistics, there are many ways teens can be aware of the dangers of texting while driving.

First, it is important to realize that texting while driving is something that is very dangerous. It not only endangers the lives of others it endangers your life as well.

When you are sending a message on your phone while operating a vehicle you are participating in a form of driving that is very distracting.

You’re clearly not paying attention to the road or any of your other surroundings. But, even though you may be distracted while driving, there are some things you can do to prevent an accident.

Turn off your phone when you get into the car
Before you step into your car, make it a habit to turn off your phone. When you don't hear any message alert or phone ring, you won't be tempted to answer it. Let phone calls and messages go to your voicemail and then just reply to them as soon as you get off out of the car.

Use hands-free cell phone accessory
There are certain cell phone accessories that would allow you to make a phone call without having to hold your phone to your ear. A headset is one cell phone accessory you would need to have if you are in dire need of making phone calls while driving.

These would allow you to keep your hands on the wheel and your eyes on the road. This accessory, along with other cell phone items like cheap cell phone faceplates, can be purchased at an inexpensive cost in most online stores.

Have discipline
Instill discipline in yourself not to use your phone while driving. Encourage your family and friends to do the same. Tell them how important it is to focus your eyes, hands, and mind on the road while driving.

This way, you and the people you know will be able to minimize dangers and avoid accidents.
