Birthday Rituals

Guest Author - Veda King Blanchard

Birthdays provide a wonderful opportunity for each of us to honor ourselves. Creating a birthday ritual to celebrate the love of, in, and for life encourages growth of all that is positive within the sphere of energy that surrounds us. By its nature, a birthday ritual is extremely personal. It has to be since itís all about creating a day that celebrates all of the things and people you enjoy most.

The day of my birthday I wake up and, before I leave my bed, I meditate in gratitude for all of the love and beauty in my life. The rest of the day I breath, relax, and spend time in nature. At the end of the day I light candles and relax in a bath scented with lavender and chamomile. All of this reminds me that I am loved and appreciated.

What are the things, people, activities, and/or events that make you the happiest? A ritual you create for the celebration of your birthday should be comprised of these things. In considering different ways to celebrate, remember that your birthday is the start and close of your year. It is a day for you, a perfect opportunity to celebrate your joys, to release your sorrows, and to celebrate every moment.

What does celebration mean to you? Do you enjoy parties? Does solitude more meet your likes? Meditate on what brings you joy, what brings you peace, what celebrating you should really look like or be. Anything you feel is appropriate will be as long as you are expressing love and joy for and toward yourself and your life.

Honoring the goddess as the source that created and is the energy that you are, can be another beautiful way to celebrate. Casting a circle can provide a peaceful place for you to work on any of the more ceremonial aspects you may wish to explore. An idea here might be to start a fire in the circle, and add to it past sorrows, losses, or negative qualities youíre ready to release and let go of. You might do this with anything representing that past to be released, even a piece of paper with a note, word, or picture. Here the fire cleanses you.

Remember, whatever you choose, itís your birthday. Enjoy it and smile.
