Online Therapy Proves To Be Beneficial

I have been saying for the longest time, that one of the keys to managing depression is participating in some sort of talk therapy. Whether it is in the office, a home, over the phone or online -- really makes no big difference. And now there are more studies to prove it!

There are researchers from the Australian National University who have found that internet based therapy may have a significant and positively long term benefit for people who suffer from depression.

The researchers evaluated the effectiveness of therapy with two websites over a course of 12 months and found that online therapy was effective as a long-term solution for subjects. They also found that it was an effective option for subjects who suffered from depression and lived in rural or remote areas.

While researchers weren't exactly why online therapy worked so well over time, they speculated that it may have been because there was a reduction on the part of the subjects to use ineffective and potentially damaging treatments.

When selecting an online therapist, remember that:

1. You are paying for a professional service...therapy should not be free.

2. Look at the credentials of the therapist.

3. Look at the professionalism and care of the website. Does it clearly and effectively tell you who the therapist is.

4. Most online therapy is a cash based transaction. If you want to use your insurance, you may have to make an office visit.

5. If you are suicidal or homicidal, then online talk therapy is not for you. You need to seek the help of a mental health professional immediately in your local area.
