Workboxes for Preschoolers

Guest Author - Alissa Moy

Workboxes are an ideal method to store work for your preschool child. First, it organizes the work in one tidy area, promoting organizational skills in your child. Second, preschoolers love to find surprises in the boxes, even if it is a coloring assignment or actual work. Third, homeschooling your preschooler is made much easier with the use of workboxes, as it offers flexibility and fun.

Begin with an easy and safe method of using workboxes. Choose a simple system, that cannot topple onto your child. If you are investing in a long term solution for preschooling your child throughout the early years, Wood Designs offers a sturdy 12 drawer storage set. It is perfect to store arts, crafts, assignments, etc. KidKraft also makes a nice storage system, which is less expensive. You can check these out at the end of this article.

Filling the workboxes is fun and simple to do. Think of current themes that you are using, as that is a great start to brainstorm ideas. There are many independent activites you can fill your child's workbox with, even if they cannot read. Melissa and Doug makes a wonderful farm lacing kit, and there is also a neat Eric Carle lacing kit as well. If you are reading Eric Carle books, this is a good tie in, or if your theme is farm animals your child will enjoy the lacing cards with a barnyard theme.

Modeling clay is a fantastic project to help your child's small muscle control. Crayola offers a multipack of seperately wrapped colors for a safe and efficient means of doling out just the right amount. Or try the Melissa and Doug Friendship Stamp Set, along with plenty of paper to create masterpieces! Even an inexpensive coloring book and crayons is a great option for a workbox assignment.

Workbook pages, in limited amounts, are also good choices for assignments. Be sure to give review material if you don't plan to do a lesson on new material. Workbook pages are a productive way to not only assess material taught, but it is also a way to promote independent work. Brighter Child offers a comprehensive preschool workbook you may want to try.

Interesting and age appropriate books are always a good choice for preschool workboxes. Books like "Wheels on the Bus", "Shapes and Colors", "The Red Book" and "Peek-A-Who" are all excellent choices.

Include items for outside play, like a jump rope, chalk or a small ball. Enjoy the creativity that filling a preschool workbox allows!
