Moving Up to the New Blogger.com Blogging System

Guest Author - Diane Cipollo

If you have been following these tutorials, you should now have a basic, bare bones weblog. When I started writing this series, GoogleTM introduced the beta version of its new blogging system which promised to have many new features. Since the new version was in the beta stage at that time, I decided to continue writing the first part of this series for the original BloggerTM system to teach you how to create a basic blog. Now that we have accomplished this and the new Blogger system is out of beta, itís time to take a look at what it has to offer.

There are many changes to the Blogger system. A few of the changes are subtle, such as the improved, user-friendly Dashboard, the finer control over the access permissions and feed settings and the new font and color controls.

The new drag-and-drop Layout Editor is a major upgrade for the new system. This editor allows you to easily add, move and rearrange each individual part or element on your blog page. The only parts of the blog page that you cannot move are the Navbar, Header and the Blog Posts area. You can move any of the other elements on the page.

This new Layout Editor also allows you to edit each part of the blog page such as the Navbar, Header, Blog Posts, Profile and Blog Archive. When you click on the Edit link for any element, you then get a pop-up wizard that will walk you through the changes you wish to make.

Adding a new element to your blog with the Layout Editor is just as easy as editing. There are several page elements, called Widgets, that you can add to your blog including the following.

List of Favorites
List of Links
Picture (uploaded from your computer)
Text, HTML, JavaScript
Feed (display an RSS feed)
AdSense
Labels
Blogger Logo

You can also add third-party widgets which are quickly growing in numbers and available all over the web. Some of these widgets are mini-applications that do simple tasks such as displaying an interactive calendar or a video. Blogger even has a built-in click button process for sharing widgets between blogs.
