What are some of the ways that you can tell?
Is it the colour? Colour might be good, but so many birds have several different colour mutations.
Is it the eye? Eyes can tell you a lot – look at the colour – look for an eye ring.
Can you see the beak? Probably not but if so, what colour is the beak?
