United Planet Month

A few weeks ago, I featured a Netherlands based organization, Nabuur.com that offers the public the opportunity to become active in urgent projects based the developing nations- via virtual volunteering. I believe they are a perfect fit for my United Planet Month round-up.

Since learning about Nabuur.com, I have joined an Ugandan village project, Jinja Central, to provide public relations services, in an effort to bring Jinja Central to the attention of possible sponsors motivated in supporting the development of a youth ICT Center. The ICT center plans to design a program to provide training to HIV/AIDS and disabled orphans.

Pastor Paul Bulenzi, inspired to effect change in the quality of life of Jinja Central’s youth, forged a partnership with Nabuur.com and works with a team of volunteers to realize the details of the project day by day.

I hope my readers will explore Nabuur.com and consider sharing their expertise to help fulfill some of the urgent tasks listed on Nabuur.com’s website.

In recognition of United Planet Month in September, I wanted to acknowledge several other organizations engaged in missions and outreach to the developing world and the United States. I’m providing a round-up and in future editions, I will be presenting more in- depth coverage and updates.

Round- up of non-profit organizations:

The Samburu Project founded by Kristen Kosinski, works to improve the living conditions for persons and families through an initiative that makes waterwells accessible to Kenya’s Samburu Tribal people. To date, since 2006, the efforts of The Samburu Project has realized the drilling of twelve wells, thereby affording 12,000 persons in Samburu, Kenya access to safe drinking water.

Thanks to the work of The Solace Tree, founded by Emilio Parga, the children, teens and adults of the Nevada and Central California region now have access to grief support services. Founder, Emilio Parga, told the Reno-Gazette Journal, “The center is about hope and healing. It’s about death education and awareness. It’s about children’s grief issues and their dealings with school, relationships, life and health issues. The center serves as a preventative mental health organization and there is nothing like it in the community.”

One topic close to my heart, deals with the issue of business carrying on the mission of charity. Peggy Pelosi, author of Corporate Karma:How business can move forward by giving back( Orenda Publishing 2007) teaches business leaders and individuals the value of integrating philanthropic programs into the workplace. She writes: “Business today is feeling the pressure to develop good corporate citizenship both from those in the talent pool looking for great companies to work for, and consumers wanting to support companies that are community minded.”

Rima McDonald, founder and Editor-in-Chief of Women’s Online Magazine recognized a need in her potential readers to reach out to the less fortunate who live and suffer beyond their borders. She is carving a space on her online forum to help raise awareness and monetary donations for the AIDDarfur.org campaign sanctioned by the United Nations. Women’s Online Magazine offers a free, one year advertising coupon listing to persons donating $100 to the cause. “It’s our world to protect and make safe for the next generation,” she told a colleague at Women’s Online Magazine. Let us celebrate United Planet month through our generosity, time and energy in helping our neighbors in need.
