Relief in Kenya

Guest Author - Rev. Jackie OŽNeal S.T.M.

The United Nations Food Program noted recently that as a result of the civil unrest in Kenya, approximately 100,000 displaced persons in Kenya's Northern Rift confront starvation.

The Red Cross is continuing its food distribution amidst road blocks and chaos in the affected regions of Kenya.

It is estimated that the recent ethnic violence and protests combined, following the re-election of President Mwai Kabaki, have caused over three hundred persons to be killed.

As recent violence has catapulted hundreds of thousands to become displaced, several relief agencies such as The Norwegian Church Aid is focused on coordinating response in the Kenya's most vulnerable regions. Food distribution has been a major priority.

Kristen Engebak, a Norwegian Church Aid official for Kenya, Somalia and Uganda noted in the organization's report, "The situation is extremely tense. Rumors spread quickly and people here are worried about what's going to happen next."

ActionAid, another organization currently responding to the needs of displaced persons in Kenya, recently called for immediate peace initiatives.

Norwegian Church Aid's website featues news and information in thier native language, but it includes regular updates and images from the affected regions in Kenya. It is essentially a faith-based organization with a mission to respond to global crises. One of its officials reported several obstacles in carrying out their recent food distribution including road blocks and a tense climate. Communications are also not reliable and some channels have been down on and off.

Via this column, we will continue to monitor updates in food distribution and aid to the the affected regions, in order to bring our readers the latest developments in the crisis, and reports from the releif agencies on the ground, in Kenya.

Today Kenyans prayed for an end to the unrest which has been destroying countless lives since December following the re-elction of the President Kabaki.
