Nesting Movie Clips for Complex Animations - 2

  1. Insert a second Keyframe on Frame 13 and a third Keyframe to Frame 15.

  2. Right click on Frame 12 and choose Create Motion Tween from the pop-up menu. Repeat this on Frame 14. Use the Transformation tool to close the eyes completely on Frame 13. Test your movie clip animation.

At this point, we have one movie clip animation. But we still need to create the bouncing head animation. Our first step is to group the head and the eyesBlink movie clip together and convert that new group to a second movie clip, which we will call "headBounce". As you can see, the eyesBlink movie clip will be nested inside the headBounce movie clip. Go back to Scene 1.

  3. Unlock the Head layer. With the Selection tool, select both the eyesBlink movie clip and the head. Click Modify – Group. With this new group still selected, click Modify – Convert to Symbol. Name this movie clip "headBounce".

We are ready to create the Motion Tween that will cause the head to bounce across the stage. Let's make it hit the bottom or top of the stage when the eyes blink. The eyes will blink the first time on Frame 13. Then if we do a little math, they will also blink on Frames 28, 43 and 58.

The head is now in the upper left corner of the stage and we have only one frame in the Scene1 Timeline. Double-click on the headBounce movie clip to edit this symbol on its own Timeline.

  4. Rename Layer 1 on this Timeline to "Bounce". Add a Keyframe to Frames 13, 28, 43, 58 and 60. Add a Motion Tween between Frames 1 and 13, 13 and 28, 28 and 43, and 43 and 58.

  5. Go back to Frame 13. With the Selection tool, drag the head to the bottom of the stage and move it slightly to the right. This will be our downward bounce.

  6. Go to Frame 28 and drag the head to the center of the stage (keep the head at the top of the stage). This will create our upward bounce.

Repeat these steps for Frame 43 and 58. On Frame 43, drag the head to the bottom and set the X position to about 400 in the Properties Inspector. Then on Frame 58, drag the head all the way to the right edge of the stage (keep the head at the top of the stage).

Test the movie. You should see the head bounce up and down and the eyes blink as the head hits the top or bottom of the stage.

Note. The default Frame Rate is 12 fps. To get a smoother animation, you can increase the Frame Rate in the Documents Properties.
