The River Lodge – A Review Located in the Great Smoky Mountains in a little town called Cullowhee in Western North Carolina, my husband and I recently stayed at The River Lodge, a delightful bed and breakfast tucked away in the hills above the Tuckasegee River. Featuring six guest rooms, it’s large enough that you don’t feel crowded, but intimate enough that you feel like you’re the only folks around. It’s the perfect blend for which every bed and breakfast strives. To further the experience, the innkeepers, Cathy and Anthony Sgambato, beautifully blend professionalism with Southern hospitality, leaving every guest feeling like a member of the family. Although native New Yorkers, this couple moved to Cullowhee in 1994 to open the inn; as a result, they are quite knowledgeable on the area, and can help you find your way to a variety of fun and interesting excursions, both in nearby Sylva and Dillsboro and points beyond. Whether you spend the day exploring the countryside or simply relaxing out on the porch with a good book, you’ll enjoy the comfort and serenity you find when you return to your room at the end of the day. Spacious, well-appointed and accompanied by its own private bath, each guest room is outfitted and decorated according to its room name. For example, I stayed in The Victoriana, which contains Victorian oak furnishings and a queen-size bed fashioned from a willow tree. The adjoining bathroom included a claw foot tub that I, regretfully, was unable to utilize during my visit. Three of the guest rooms, including mine, open onto a covered balcony filled with comfortable wicker chairs and tables. This is the perfect place to take in the views: of the surrounding countryside, of the ambling river waters, of a wandering cow here and there. It’s also a wonderful place to share a quiet conversation with other guests or simply sit back and watch the hummingbirds fight to protect their feeder. Then, of course, there are the mouthwatering breakfasts the Sgambatos prepare each morning. Almost too pretty to eat, each dish is an artful presentation of culinary excellence. During my visit, I enjoyed such treats as baked pears, blueberry pancakes and the Sgambatos’ own version of eggs Benedict, which featured baked croissants, tasty ham and the fluffiest poached eggs I’ve ever had. All in all, I made sure to clean my plate at every opportunity. Simply put, The River Lodge is the epitome of what every bed and breakfast experience should be: relaxing, comfortable and enjoyable. So the next time you’re in Western North Carolina, book a room at The River Lodge and indulge in some quality leisure time.
