The Gulf Oil Disaster and How You Can Help

The Gulf Oil Disaster and How You Can Help
I just can’t watch CNN anymore. I can’t stand to see the images of the devastation that the BP oil spill has caused to the Gulf area. It’s heartbreakingly tragic. But I saw the Dawn Saves Wildlife television commercial the other day, about how Dawn has directed resources to the area to help clean and save wildlife. And I got to thinking; there must be other volunteer resources for those interested in helping. After a bit of research, I did find many resources for those looking to volunteer their time to help make a difference. So I’m passing it along to you.

First, and certainly most hard hit by the BP oil spill, has been Louisiana. In that state, the Louisiana Serve Commission is working to train volunteers to respond in a variety of ways to the disaster. Due to the significant danger involved, volunteers cannot go anywhere near the oil to conduct oil removal operations. However, volunteers can be trained to rescue wildlife and conduct a number of other projects related to the oil spill. For more information how you can volunteer in Louisiana, check out the Louisiana Serve Commission.

Over in Florida, the Governor’s Commission on Volunteerism and Community Service has called upon Floridians to become “Coast Watch Volunteers,” to monitor the coastline for the presence of oil, changes in air quality, and any injured or oiled wildlife needing attention. Here’s more information on the Coast Watch Volunteer Program: Volunteer Florida

The Waterkeeper Alliance, a movement of advocates who monitor and fight to protect our planet’s waterways, was founded in 1999 by Robert F. Kennedy Jr. In response to the Gulf Oil Spill, the Waterkeeper Alliance has created Save Our Gulf, a project to further assist all the waterkeepers in the Gulf area with this new challenge. You can make a donation to help this advocacy group fight for the clean-up and preservation of the Gulf by going to Save Our Gulf.

For those of us who live too far away to get involved in the hands-on effort in the Gulf, we can certainly help by making monetary contributions to the organizations that are entrenched in the relief effort. Also, we can buy Dawn dish soap. For every bottle we buy and activate on the special Dawn website, Dawn will donate one dollar to the rescue of wildlife affected by the oil spill.
