If the pants fit, wear them—especially if four women with varying body types miraculously share the same pair of jeans. The magic of the jeans returns in Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2, as the four young women face loss, love, and hardships.
Directed by Sanaa Hamri and based on Ann Brashares’s series of novels, the all-star cast finds themselves in volumes, two, three, and four of Brashares’s bestsellers.
The movie once again stars America Ferrera as the precocious Carmen, Alexis Bledel as shy and beautiful Lena, Amber Tamblyn as sharp-witted Tibby, and Blake Lively as free-spirited Bridget.
As the movie begins, we learn that Carmen worries the girls are drifting apart as they all attend different college and have separate interests.
We find Bridget on an archeological dig in Turkey over the summer, Lena attending the Rhode Island School of Design where she takes life-drawing classes, Carmen in Yale who spends the summer in Vermont, cast in a role in The Winter’s Tale, and Tibby taking film at NYU who is required to take summer school because the characters in her romantic comedy broke up.
As expected, the adventures and hardships the young women encounter evoke the significance of friendship, family, love, and ultimately, sisterhood. While the women have started new lives and interests, they still value their precious bond.
The sequel shows that these women have indeed grown up, with more brave performances as they have fewer inhibitions during challenging times. The tears flow more freely this time around and the characters seem fuller—making them more relatable.
It’s a good summer flick; sweet, playful, and intimate.
