At 31 Kris Carr takes a journey she never thought she'd have to take at such an early age. On this trip she became an "expert at CAT scans, MRIs and radiology". Kris was diagnosed with epithelioid rare vascular cancer. The key words in this long title are rare and cancer. It's an unusual cancer that affects the lining of the blood vessels in the liver and lungs. She was diagnosed as stage IV. If you are familiar with cancer you know there is no stage V.
Kris, who was a working actress and budding film maker, would never call her self a quitter. With this dire news she decided to film a documentary about her search for a longer healthier life with cancer instead of a quick and lonely acceptance.
My first experience with Kris was through the documentary, Crazy Sexy Cancer, which I highly recommend getting your hands on if you can.
It's a tremendous journey of discovery. This led me to her book. In short this book is about her diagnosis, quitting her job, getting healthy (as healthy as someone with stage IV cancer can get), finding love and getting married. Don't worry; I'm not giving anything away.
She is not alone on this journey. Readers get to meet her mother and father and at least thirteen other powerful women who have battled the big "C".
Quirky, comical, beautiful. Those are just a few terms to describe the personal impression I get from reading Crazy Sexy Cancer Tips.
Other adjectives: strong, brave, loving, tough. She's not done yet. Not by a long shot.
Crazy Sexy Cancer Tips is an easy read and has lots of useable tips on dealing with cancer, people and medical staff. One of my favorite tips (something I also recommend) is to take along a pal to any and all doctor's visits and have them take notes for you. It's stressful and easy to forget or miss what is being said so being able to read the notes helps clarify and fill in the blanks when you ears suddenly shut off.
This is one of the best books I've ever read. I had a hard time putting it down and I highly recommend it for cancer survivors as well as co-survivors.
