The Nine Lives of Chloe King

Guest Author - Amy Romine

ABC Family is stacking the deck with a page from Joss Whedon, famed teen angst, action filled creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Firefly, and The Dollhouse. This is not to say that the one-hour scripted drama The Nine Lives of Chloe King is a copy-cat, but pretty dang close. Per the official ABC Family Website, Chloe King is looking forward to celebrating her birthday with her friends and single mother, just like every other year…that is until she starts developing heightened abilities, and discovers she's being pursued by a mysterious figure. Chloe soon learns she's part of an ancient race which has been hunted by human assassins for millennia —and that she may be their only hope for ultimate survival.

Granted, I have not seen the show, and I am sure that it is not a Buffy clone, however let us look at the similarities. Chloe apparently has two buddies, a guy and a girl, and a single Mom. Buffy had two buddies, known as Scoobies, Willow and Zander, and was raised by single Mom Joyce. Chloe develops heightened abilities, Buffy developed heightened abilities. Chloe finds out she is a part of an ancient race and she may be their only hope for survival. Buffy was one in a long list of Vampire Slayers chosen to defend the world.

Yeah, it is a little close. I would like to say however, that this is not a bad thing. I was and am a huge Buffy fan. I have all seven seasons on DVD, and pull them out for weekend long marathons on regular occasions.

Not to seem nostalgic, but Buffy kicked butt because she literally kicked butt, and there was this sarcastic, edgy, sassy scripting to the show that grounded it enough to keep you hooked. In seeing the brief previews of Nine Lives this weekend, one of the things that immediately got my attention was the attitude in the dialog. So much so that I am writing this article, and have full intentions of putting the show to the three episode test.

Television shows are all about alchemy. You need the right circumstances, climate, cast, writer, director, and viewer to make a hit. There hasn’t been anything close to the weekly angst –action of Buffy in a very long time, and honestly we are due. My only reservation is that it has been attempted before, even by the master himself Joss, with disastrous results. Again, it is all about that spark of magic and the momentum to keep it alive.
Keep your eyes peeled and your DVR's ready, there may just be a little creative sorcery in the air.
