Online Games for Charity

Online Games for Charity
If you've got time on your hands and find yourself endlessly browsing the internet, why not put that time to better use? Log onto one of many on-line charity games and, while you're having fun, you could be helping charitable organizations improve their bottom lines.

FreeRice.com is the site, and since it debuted in 2007, its sponsors have donated 94 BILLION grains of rice. It’s easy and fun. You can select to play a game from six different subjects: the English language; art; chemistry; geography; languages; or math. My personal favorite is the English grammar game. For each question you answer correctly, the site’s sponsors will donate 10 grains of rice. Keep playing, and you’ll see your virtual bowl of rice continue to fill up. Play as much as you want, and you are earning advertising revenue that gets donated to the United Nation’s World Food Program, which gets the food into the right mouths.

Another fun site is JogoGreen.com. This site, which invites visitors to take an interesting quiz about the environment, has planted nearly 82,000 trees since its launch in early 2008 by a group of college students. Answer ten questions correctly, and you’ve earned enough in advertising revenue to plant one tree. Proceeds are donated to the non-profit organization, Trees for the Future, a legitimate charity that has planted 50 million trees in Africa and Latin America since 1989.

You can also check out Charitii.com. This site allows you to choose from four charities. For every correct answer in the word quiz, you can donate clean water to communities living in extreme poverty, give food to malnourished children and families, provide school education for children around the world, or help protect our rainforests. I found the quizzes on this site to be particularly challenging. Again, all donations are funded through advertising revenue.

I know with these kinds of sites, it’s easy to question their legitimacy. Even though we may be playing games, it is no game to think you are donating to charity unless you truly are. The three sites I feature here are indeed legitimate and have been investigated through various hoax identification sites. Though I have seen other sites out there that use the same concept of a fun game to generate charitable donations, I have not been able to prove that they are legitimate. If I do, I’ll certainly update this article.

Have fun, raise funds! I can’t think of a better use of five minutes of my time than that! Can you?
