Tips for RCIís Oasis of the Seas

Tips for RCIís Oasis of the Seas
By Candyce H. Stapen

Considering cruising aboard the worldís largest ship, Royal Caribbean Internationalís Oasis of the Seas? Then, follow these tips to navigate your ideal vacation. The ship, which launched December 5, 2009, carries 5400 passengers when cabins hold two people and more than 6,000 passengers at full capacity. The vesselís sheer size adds never before possibilities for fun at sea, but the volume of people also creates some challenges.

First know whatís aboard. The Oasis of the Seas floats out a revolutionary design. By opening up the shipís spine, the cruise line created two neighborhoods--or areas--that are interior, but open to the sky. Central Park, with its thousands of real plants as well as cafes and shops, offers a nice place for walking, much like an urban park. Boardwalk, anchored by a full-size carousel and an AquaTheater, recalls the beach side boulevards of years past.

To the Sports Zone, RCI added a second FlowRider for ďsurfingĒ on board as well as zip line that stretches nine decks above Boardwalk. In addition to these activities, the Oasis offers such now-standard fare aboard RCIís larger vessels as rock climbing, ice skating and mini-golf.

Along with nightly shows, Oasis features a comedy club and a 90 minute version of the Broadway show ďHair Spray.Ē Other firsts include a separate childrenís puppet theater for Adventure Ocean, RCIís supervised activities program for ages 3 through 11, plus Royal Babies and Tots, a nursery for ages 6 months to 26 months as well as expanded facilities for teens 12-14 and 15-17.

The key to creating a great voyage is to book ahead--not just your cabin--but certain activities. RCIís new computerized system allows passengers to book shows and certain activities before embarking. Once onboard, you can view your schedule on your cabin television.

What to book ahead? Be sure to reserve tickets to the ice show, the comedy club and the AquaTheater. Also book your meals at specialty restaurants as well as spa treatments. Although you cannot schedule nursery time before boarding, be sure to visit the nursery on the first day to find out how many hours each family with a baby may have (this will vary with demand) and to block your preferred times.

By planning ahead, you will get the most from your voyage aboard Oasis of the Seas.
