There are many different types of jigs that are using in both freshwater and saltwater fishing. Each has a unique shaped head and can be found in both small and large sizes. They are made for all types of fishing and is a favorite artificial lure for many fishermen.
A fishing lure named 'jig' should not be confused with the fishing term 'jigging'. Jigging is actually a fishing technique of using an artificial lure in the water, where the lure is cast out and brought in via short pulls of the pole in jerks rather than reeling the lure in one fluid mothion. Jigging gets the fish's attention by action rather than by look as the jigs can.
Here is a general guide of the different head shapes, and a definition of a fishing jig.
