Book Review - Uncommon Crochet
Guest Author - Kate Pullen

Uncommon Crochet is an interesting crochet book. Throughout the book, Julie Armstrong Holetz takes a contemporary look at some old and traditional aspects of crochet. There are many refreshing features to the book which certainly make it an attractive read for crochets of all experience levels and backgrounds.

Techniques
The book starts with a comprehensive technique section. This provides enough detail for even non crocheters to pick up a hook and get stitching. Personally speaking, I find the addition of basic crochet instruction into a crochet project book is often a frustrating experience. There is often not enough detail for non crocheters, and way too much information for experienced crocheters. The instructions in Uncommon Crochet are full and detailed, and they include plenty of other useful information and crochet tips such as how to read patterns and blocking techniques. While very experienced crocheters would probably be happy to forgo this section for additional projects, the level of detail and the quality of the information provided would provide something of interest to the majority of crocheters – even if simply to act as a reminder.

Fibers and Yarns
One of the joys of Uncommon Crochet is the way that Julie Armstrong Holetz explores different fibers and yarns to crochet with. Therefore instead of the book being full of projects and designs that only work with a single hard-to-find or expensive luxury yarn, crocheters are encourage to explore the wide range of other materials that are fantastic to crochet with and that make great finished items. These include string and twine, wire, hemp, jute and leather. Most of the fibers are interchangeable and this is a great way for crocheters to customize and personalize the designs. These commodity fibers and yarns are readily available.

The Projects
The 25 projects use techniques that are explored throughout the book, including feltmaking and three dimensional work. The projects range from bags and purses, to baskets and vases. Each project is broken down into step by step instructions and ideas for variations are given where appropriate. All of the projects are accessible to crocheters from novices through to experienced crocheters. Any difficult or tricky aspects of a design are fully explained.

Who is Uncommon Crochet Recommended For?
Uncommon crochet is certainly recommended for crocheters who are looking for something a little different. Even experienced crocheters will find some of the approaches and designs interesting. Beginners will find this a 'one stop' book which provides instruction and projects.

Uncommon Crochet is also an excellent choice for people who enjoy other crafts but are yet to have a go at crochet.
