Summer Reading Programs

Guest Author - Alissa Moy

There are several free book opportunities for homeschoolers this summer, and you will surely want to take advantage of them.

Barnes and Noble is offering their summer reading program again this year. The theme for summer 2011 is "Imagination's Destination". Parents can go online to download a summer reading packet with activities, a reading log and summer ideas. Visit www.barnesandnoble.com/summerreading/ for printable resources. Many stores will also offer story times and summer arts and crafts activities to go along with the theme. Children can earn a free book for every eight books they read and write on a log sheet. Here is a list of the free books that will be offered:

Books for Grades 1 & 2
Clifford Makes the Team by Norman Bridwell
Diving Dolphin by Karen Wallace
Jorge el curioso: Huellas de dinosaurio by H. A. Rey
New Kid in Town by Mercer Mayer
Scat, Cat! by Alyssa Satin Capucilli

Books for Grades 3 & 4
Braving the Lake by Erin Falligant
Mercy Watson Thinks Like a Pig by Kate DiCamillo
Sleepover Sleuths by Carolyn Keene
Stanley, Flat Again! by Jeff Brown
Summer According to Humphrey by Betty G. Birney
La telaraņa de Carlota by E. B. White

Books for Grades 5 & 6
The Batboy by Mike Lupica
Extra Credit by Andrew Clements
Gregor the Overlander by Suzanne Collins
Ida B by Katherine Hannigan
James and the Giant Peach by Roald Dahl
Liberty Porter, First Daughter by Julia DeVillers
Pandora Gets Jealous by Carolyn Hennesy

The ages for participants are five through early "tweens", so any of the books can be earned for any age student. So, if you have a fifth grader looking for a third grade reader, or vice versa, it is just fine. No one will question your reading selection, it is just great that your child is enthusiastic about reading!

Scholastic and Kumon have teamed up to help your child earn up to five free books for completed summer reading and corresponding activity sheets. Check out the site at www.scholastic.com/kumon/learnandearn/ to see what books your homeschooler can earn to read over the summer. This is a mail in opportunity, while supplies last, so be sure to read the directions for this program thoroughly.

Many local libraries offer summer reading programs where children can earn free books as well. Check with your local library for details on their summer offerings.
