Spring is a traditional time to tackle tough cleaning projects at home, and is a good time to tackle those chores in your business or work space, too. Regardless of where your business is located, these tips will help you greet the warmer weather more organized and ready to build your business.
1--Wash the windows so you’ll have a clear view of whatever is outside. Clean your floors and baseboards, and spot-clean the walls. Check for cobwebs in the corners and clean your light fixtures, too.
2--Clean your computer and office equipment surfaces with a damp cloth to remove dust. Clean underneath equipment. Clean your computer monitor and keyboard. While you are cleaning your office equipment, refill paper in your printer and fax machines and make sure you have backup ink or toner.
3--Clean your work surfaces. Remove everything and dust or wash your desk or workspace. As you put things back, clean them, too. Fill the stapler and paper clip holder. Throw away old ink pens.
4--Toss old magazines and papers. Throw away extra calendars, especially last year’s.
5--File the business cards you’ve collected from contacts. If you really want to declutter, scan them and create a virtual business card file.
6--Remove the post-it notes or other out-of-date reminders you have stuck to your monitor or bulletin board.
7--Dust your bookshelves and books. Remove any books you no longer need and either sell them or donate them.
8--File or toss all your loose paperwork.
9—Collect all your supplies into one “supply” area. A closet or file drawer will work, and you’ll always know where your supplies are if you keep them together. Plus, it’s easier to inventory and add items you need to your shopping list.
10—Clean out your email in-box. Set up subfolders for messages you need to keep or respond to so that your inbox can stay empty.
11—Back up your computer and schedule regular backups. Choose a day once a month and run a backup every month on that date. You may need more or less frequent backups, but make it routine.
