Sonlight Curriculum

Sonlight Curriculum
The Sonlight curriculum is a Christian homeschool company that is heavily literature based. The mission is to empower parents to raise life long learners who will follow Christ in whatever He calls them to do. The goal of the program is to learn to understand first and to judge second. The philosophy of Sonlight is for a way of life for homeschoolers to enjoy and explore. With the benefits of Great literature, the homeschool curriculum is strongly built.

One advantage of the program is that it provides all the scheduling and planning for you. The Instructor's Guides help to prepare lessons and are a big benefit for parents. The Guides include background notes, narration questions, comprehension questions, vocabulary word help and more. A potential caveat to the program is that it requires three to four hours a day study time and for parents of multiple homeschoolers it can be difficult to attain this requirement.

The Language Arts program is based on "natural learning", meaning children learn by discovery. It is not a standard workbook method. Sonlight uses copying and dictating as two basic lesson activities in the natural learning method. Natural learning activity sheets provide additional grammar instruction.

The History program, which is the centerpiece of the curriculum, gives students an overview of important events and people of the past and biographies. Living books of heroes and memorable stories make history come alive for the student.

Sonlight also includes daily Bible readings and weekly Scripture memory assignments that are in the Core Instructor's guide. If you follow the plan, you will cover almost the entire Bible once every five or six years. Sonlight also assigns books on apologetic and Bible study methods, as well spiritual classes.

The Science program has been revamped recently for grades K through 6 with new books and information. Readers are quality books in each Core and are in a range of difficulty levels. Years are split into Cores, based on age. Before Core 3, reading skills are developed. Starting at Core 3, the Readers coincide with subject matter in each level's history program. Read Alouds benefit the family by reading together and provides notes for discussion that tie in with the time period you are studying.

Sonlight offers support, community forums, advisors, consultants and quarterly newsletters. Complete packages for curriculum as well as other materials and resources are available for grades K through 12. By purchasing the package, you can save time and money and avoid frustration of purchasing partial programs elsewhere. You can create your own program by combining Sonlight Core, with Math, Science, Bible or Language Arts. There are 18 Core packages. Math programs are offered through Horizon Math and Saxon Math. Many electives can be ordered online such as Art Appreciation and Music. For example, Piano Wizard academy starts at $497.00 a package. Art books can be ordered at varying prices, such as Children's Book of Art by Usborne books at $14.95. There is a Newcomer Curriculum, and ready made packages. There is a guaranteed refund on any purchases if you are not convinced of the program.
