Crochet for a Wedding!

Guest Author - Kate Pullen

A wedding is a very special occasion and an occasion where crochet can play a part. Think about all the different aspects of a wedding where crocheted items could be used - table decorations, bridesmaid's jewelry, ring cushion and of course, the wedding dress!

Crocheting a wedding dress would be a huge project - but what a great opportunity it would be to create something really special and a proper family heirloom. British clothes store Monsoon have a crocheted wedding dress for sale - take a look at the Monsoon website if you are looking for inspiration (click the picture to enlarge and then zoom in to see the stitch detail). A free crochet wedding dress pattern can be found at the wonderful Yesterknits website. You will find this under the free pattern link half way down the page. (If you click on this then you can also find more crochet wedding dress patterns which are available for purchase.) If you are not aware of Yesterknits then their website is worth a visit. Yesterknits is based in Scotland and has the largest collection of vintage knitting patterns in the world - over 250,000 individual designs - plus around 50,000 crochet patterns. Most of the patterns were published in the UK between 1880 and 1980.

The crocheted dress can be topped with a crocheted head piece. How about a crochet lace Juliet cap - take a look around the free pattern sites, there are many available which would look great for a wedding. Other caps and hats can easily be adapted to make lovely wedding head wear. Work in complimentary colors for brides maids and flower girls.

A veil can be made from crochet too - whilst a whole crocheted veil might be a bit heavy unless worked in the finest of threads, a piece of silk organza or tulle would look lovely with a crocheted lace edging and this would look great with any wedding dress.

If a veil is not suitable for the style of wedding you are planning, then a variety of head pieces can be made from crochet. Lots of tiny Irish crochet roses crocheted from fine silk would look lovely clipped into a brides flowing locks, or perhaps sewn onto a hair slide or band for a more formal look. Other flowers would work well too - there are a variety of free patterns for flowers available. Experiment with different flowers worked in a fine silk.

Flowers can also be crocheted and made into a bridal posy. A variety of roses, rose buds and other flowers would look great together. Beaded flowers can look really good too, and if worked with pearls and crystal beads would be a great compliment to a wedding outfit. Take a look at the free pattern at Fire Mountain Gems for ideas.

Have you had a crocheted wedding? Do send us some pictures, we'd love to see them!
