Southern Rose Ranch Strawberry Custard French Toast

Tucked away down a quiet country road near the quintessential small Texas town of Chappell Hill, you’ll find the Southern Rose Ranch Bed and Breakfast. Located only fifteen minutes from downtown Brenham, in Washington County, the Southern Rose is in the heart of the historic birthplace of Texas. The beautiful stone outdoor kitchen is a great place to enjoy Donna’s gourmet breakfast, which often includes one of her guest favorites, Strawberry Custard French Toast. Or you can spend an evening sitting by the fire with a glass of fine wine. Next to the outdoor kitchen is a hot tub just waiting for you to relax in or lie back in the hammock and take a nap or read a book.

The Star Suite
Spacious and elegant, the Star Suite has a luxurious queen bed decked out in beautiful linens. It has a large living and dining area, full kitchen, beautiful wood floors and bath/shower combo. It’s the perfect space for two but if the more the merrier is your motto it includes a twin bed and sleeper in case you need to comfortably accommodate a few extras.



The Rose Suite
Here you’ll find a beautiful suite featuring a Bain Ultra claw foot air bath and a separate shower. A wet bar, with refrigerator and coffee bar, are all the kitchen you need. Steve and Donna will make sure you don’t go hungry! The Rose suite offers a luxurious Queen bed, antique dining table and comfortable living area.

Kicking back on the ranch doesn’t mean you’ll get bored, there’s plenty to do in Washington County from: traveling the back roads taking in the historic sites, viewing the beautiful bluebonnets in springtime, touring the Blue Bell Creameries, visiting the Antique Rose Emporium, shopping, eating, and wine tasting. And you won’t want to miss the great performances at the Unity Theater while you’re in town.

Donna guarantees this French toast is easy to make and is sure to impress your guests.

Strawberry Custard French Toast

Slice French bread into 1 1/2" slices-usually two pieces per person or three if bread is very narrow. Whip together 8 eggs, 2-cups half & half, 1-cup sugar, and 1Tbsp of vanilla. Dip each slice in egg mixture. Place slices in large 9 x 13 baking dish, that has been buttered or Pam. Sprinkle with cinnamon. Bake at 350 degrees until golden brown. (Usually 20-30 minutes). Spread over top with Whipped Cream Cheese or Cheesecake Filling (find in the dairy section near the cream cheese). Top with sliced strawberries.
For syrup, microwave 1 minute on 50%, one spoonful of chocolate fudge topping for ice cream and Butter Pecan syrup in a little pitcher. Stir and then pour over strawberry French toast. Yum! Serve with local sausage and scrambled eggs on the side.
